Salad Rocket

Eruca vesicaria subsp. sativa

INTRODUCTION

Rocket is a member of the Brassica family and derives its name from the Italian word "ruchetta" or "rucola"

An annual crop originating from the Mediterranean area, it is a pungent, peppery salad leaf.

In certain parts of the world, it is more commonly known as "arugula".

Salad rocket is easy to grow, and with a quick turnaround, it's a great crop to grow for the beginner.

Soil Preparation

Salad rocket can be grown outside planted in the soil from spring until autumn, or in pots and containers. Pots and containers have the advantage of being mobile and can be offered protection during the winter months.

If growing outside, ensure the soil is well-prepared and moisture retentive. Rocket will benefit from some shade in the hotter months of summer.

Sowing & Planting

Sow seed thinly with 30cm (12 inches) between rows.

If growing in pots, simply fill pots, sow thinly and lightly cover with compost.

Growing & General Cultivation

Rocket is a very quick-growing subject, so successional sowings are recommended.

If left for too long, the plants will very quickly bolt and produce flowers (although the flowers are edible).

Keep weed-free and well-watered.

Pests & Diseases

Salad rocket in general is pest and disease-free, however, flea beetle can become a nuisance during the summer months as they are on all brassica crops.

The leaves will become covered in small holes and become unsightly.

Chemical control is available should you so wish.

Harvesting

Harvest leaves fresh and use immediately.

Regular harvesting will help keep plants productive rather than bolting.
