January
on the Allotment
Winter
January, the start of the new year for us all, but also the start of the veg growing year (unless you managed to make a really early start in the autumn).
January is a month guaranteed to be cold, wet, and with short days. Very little can be done on the veg plot and Sunday afternoons may be spent flicking through the pages of this seasons seeds catalogues, trying to decide which varieties to try this season and reminiscing on what was good, and what was not so good, from last year. While it’s quiet, make sure that whatever can be done in January, is done in January...
If this happens to be your first outing into the world of veg gardening, then this month is filled with the excitement of your adventures ahead.
January is the month when all the preparation and planning takes place or should be finalised. Any winter digging needs to be completed, compost dug in, seed orders sent off, and tools made ready.
Getting ahead, and staying ahead, combined with good planning and preparation is absolutely essential for the allotmenteer in January and one of the top tips any old gardening hand will tell you.
Don’t wait until spring with the arrival of warmer weather before carrying out the jobs listed in the jobs to do this month section below. As spring approaches and the weather warms, every veg gardening job and project will need doing at exactly the same time.
