Chicory / Radicchio
Cichorium intybus
INTRODUCTION
There are three types of Chicory, but the Radicchio type, also known as Italian Chicory, looks and is produced in a similar way to lettuce.
Radicchio is generally produced during summer and autumn outdoors but can be harvested during winter and spring with the protection of a greenhouse or polytunnel.
Radicchio, grown for its bitter and spicy foliage, is a perennial crop but is best treated as an annual. It can be harvested as whole-head or treated as a cut-and-come-again baby leaf.
