Seed Supplier Review
| Introduction
Whether you choose to sow seed or buy plot-ready plants, the journey of every vegetable has to originate from a seed producer and seller at some point.
In the UK, the vegetable and flower seed industry operates through two distinct channels. The first comprises seed breeders. This dynamic sector represents the critical first link in our food production chain with specialists in genetics, hybridisation, and plant breeding.
These are often divisions of global corporations, with much of their innovative breeding work concentrated in European facilities, particularly in the Netherlands. These companies invest heavily in research and development, creating new varieties that offer improved disease resistance, yield potential, and climate resilience. The seed industry is constantly evolving through advanced breeding techniques, sustainable practices, and cutting-edge research.
The second channel consists of seed merchants, who serve as the vital link between breeders and home gardeners. They source, package, and distribute seeds to meet the needs of domestic growers. However, commercial vegetable producers typically bypass these merchants, establishing direct relationships with breeding houses to access their specific crop requirements.
This dual system ensures that while large-scale farmers can access cutting-edge varieties directly, home gardeners and allotment holders can still obtain high-quality seeds through trusted merchants who understand their unique needs.
For the UK grower, the seed breeding industry is dominated by 14 leading players. For those of you who may be interested, here is the league of global vegetable seed breeders that you should know about:
Syngenta (Sinochem - China)
Seminis (Bayer - Germany)
Hazera (Limagrain - France)
Clause (Limagrain - France)
Vilmorin (Limagrain - France)
Nunhems (BASF -Germany)
Rijk Zwaan (Independant -Netherlands)
Enza Zaden (Independant -Netherlands)
Bejo Zaden (Independant -Netherlands)
Sakata (Independent - Japan)
Takii (Independent - Japan)
Gautier Semences (Independant - France)
Elsoms (Independent - UK)
Tozer Seeds (Independent - UK)
As part of our Vegetable Seed Supplier Reviews, we take an in-depth look at individual players in the seed merchant industry and here we are focusing our attention on E.W. King & Co. trading as Kings Seeds.
GrowMad spent the day being shown around their premises and various operations by management, Andrew Tokely, Horticultural director and Charlotte Bird, head of all things IT and social media.
We had a chance to discover all there is to know and there is much to cover, so let's open the seed packet on this Essex-based seed merchant with a rich history in British horticulture...
| Kings Seeds - Company Overview...
Kings Seeds: A Legacy of Seed Excellence Since 1888
The roots of Kings Seeds can be traced back to 1793 when John King first began growing seeds on just 3 acres of land in Essex. This small operation was later expanded by John's son, John Kemp King, who established his own company, J.K. King Seeds.
It was John Kemp King's grandson, the young Ernest William King, who would go on to found the company we know today as Kings Seeds. After being refused a job at his grandfather's firm upon leaving school, the determined 18-year-old Ernest vowed to one day own the family business.
In 1888, Ernest acquired a small shop near his grandfather's establishment and launched his own rival venture, E.W. King & Co. Over the next 16 years, the company flourished, moving to much larger premises and becoming renowned worldwide for its exceptional sweet pea varieties. By 1918, E.W. King had become the world's largest wholesale seed supplier, with offices and trial grounds in both Coggeshall and near Reading.
Recognizing an opportunity, Ernest later took over the running of the J.K. King business as well, keeping the two companies' separate identities. He attributed the firm's success to the "purity of the stocks" and the rigorous quality control measures employed by his own experts.
Ernest's passion for sweet peas was evident - he devoted much of the company's catalogue to showcasing over 100 varieties, even earning the moniker "The Sweet Pea King" and serving as Vice President of the National Sweet Pea Society. Clever marketing tactics, such as naming varieties after new technologies like the wireless station "2LO," helped ensure Kings Seeds was one of the first to be broadcast on the BBC.
Today, 125 years after its founding, Kings Seeds remains a flourishing leader in the UK seed industry, consistently ranked among the top three suppliers. The company continues to cultivate some of its original land, producing exclusive Sweet Pea seed stocks that are distributed to independent growers across the globe. With a state-of-the-art laboratory ensuring exceptional standards in germination, vigour, and purity, Kings Seeds seamlessly blends traditional practices with modern innovation.

Let's take a closer look...
| Suffolk Herbs
Suffolk Herbs is a specialist division of Kings Seeds that focuses on:
- Medicinal and culinary herb varieties
- Traditional and heritage herb varieties
- Organic herb and vegetable seeds
- Natural growing methods
The company was originally independent but was acquired by Kings Seeds to enhance its herb seed offerings. Located in the same area as Kings Seeds (Essex/Suffolk region), they maintain their distinct brand identity while operating under the Kings Seeds umbrella.
| Gourmet Genetics
Born from a passion for exceptional flavour, Gourmet Genetics™ began its journey in 2011 at the picturesque Laughing Owl Nursery near Spalding, Lincolnshire.
Founded by expert breeder Mark Rowland, the company initially focused on developing superior cherry tomatoes for home gardeners. Its emphasis was on creating modern, open-pollinated varieties that combine outstanding taste with excellent growing characteristics.
This commitment to innovation and quality caught the attention of Kings Seeds, leading to a marketing partnership in October 2018, and a full acquisition in August 2020. This union has enabled Gourmet Genetics™ to flourish and expand its premium product range while maintaining its core values of exceptional breeding and flavour-first philosophy.
Building on their success with tomatoes, Gourmet Genetics™ embarked on an ambitious chilli breeding program, evaluating over 200 cultivars from across the globe to identify varieties perfectly suited to Northern European growing conditions. This meticulous selection process has yielded remarkable results, including the compact yet productive Hot Lemon type 'Madre Vieja', and the early-fruiting Naga variety 'Wraith'.
The breeding program continues to innovate in both categories, as demonstrated by the recent introduction of 'Ruby Falls', a cocktail tomato that marries exceptional taste with a space-saving narrow habit – perfect for today's gardens.
In line with our commitment to quality and safety, all Gourmet Genetics™ tomato and chilli varieties fully comply with UK legislation and have tested negative for ToBRFV where applicable.
| Seed Quality Assessment
For the allotmenteer, every gardening year begins with a promise sealed in a seed packet.
Seed quality is an absolute given for any seed breeder, seller and above all, gardener. Sowing, waiting for germination, and subsequent growing are time-consuming and cost money.
At Kings Seeds, they take seed purity, viability, and germination rates very seriously, to the point that they have their own labs. Every seed variety is tested annually.
So just what are they looking and checking for?
Seed Quality Control Measures: Ensuring Success for Every Grower
- Seed Germination Viability Testing:
The foundation of successful growing starts with high-quality, viable seeds that are guaranteed to germinate. To ensure this, Controlled Germination Tests are conducted in the Kings Seeds labs. These tests replicate the conditions of your specific growing environment, providing an accurate measure of seed viability.
- Physical Purity:
Clean seeds mean healthier crops. Specialised equipment removes debris, ensuring seeds are clean and uniform. Visual inspections are carried out by skilled Kings Seeds personnel who check for impurities and damage, ensuring seeds always meet high standards.
- Genetic Purity:
All varieties are vigorously checked to ensure true-to-type seeds for your plot or allotment.
- Pathogen and Pest Control:
The last thing any grower wants is to find their seed contaminated by either pests or disease. Screening for pathogens and safeguarding against pests and diseases is always a top priority. Lab tests identify viruses, bacteria, and fungi before seeds are packaged.
- Hermetic Packaging:
Airtight bags protect against environmental fluctuations keeping seeds dormant until needed. Moisture content is regulated between 8–12%.
- Accurate Labeling and Traceability:
Each and every batch of seeds entering the warehouse is labelled with a variety name, germination rate, lot number and harvest date. Batch traceability ensures that any issues can be traced back to their source for corrective action.
- Compliance with Regulations:
All seed companies adhere to stringent standards to protect growers and ecosystems. In the UK, this includes compliance with Defra regulations. This is supported by regular audits and reviews. Annual audits also ensure facilities and practices meet evolving standards.
- Storage and Handling Practises:
Preserving quality over time is essential as many seed types and varieties can be in store for lengthy periods. Climate-controlled warehouses protect seeds from humidity, heat, and pests. Some seed is stored ambiently, while others are kept at around freezing point.
- Continuous Improvement:
Learning from each season's customer feedback, and insights from growers and allotment holders are key to quality improvements.
- Organic certification (if applicable):
All organic seed offerings are certified as fully organic.
- Seed treatment information
Unless otherwise stated, all seeds supplied are free from any type of seed treatment or priming.

Pricing Structure
Pricing of seeds, plants, bulbs or sundries is always a major consideration in the purchasing choice of most home gardeners.
Kings Seeds, understands that value matters to home gardeners. Their commitment to accessibility is reflected in their pricing structure, with seeds starting from just 75p per packet. This competitive pricing makes quality gardening accessible to everyone while maintaining the high standards their customers expect.
While their hybrid seed varieties command a higher price point due to their specialised breeding and production processes and higher associated costs, they represent an investment in superior performance and reliability. Whether you choose our economical open-pollinated varieties or premium hybrid seeds, you'll find exceptional value throughout the Kings seeds range, whatever category you are purchasing from.
Equally, their sundry selection is always of superior quality with exceptional value-for-money pricing.
Delivery Charges
Kings Seeds delivery and shipping costs are very competitive in comparison with other companies. Charges are reviewed annually with an up-to-date price list available here: Delivery Charges
Order Accuracy
Orders are collated to the highest standards. No substitutes are made without prior customer consent. Stock control is maintained in a highly efficient manner enabling stock levels to be immediately updated online.
Packaging Quality
Packaging for orders is substantial. Seeds will be mailed in padded envelopes, with larger items being boxed.
The current Kings Seeds catalogue is protected by recyclable polythene, which degrades faster than standard polythene and uses 50% less material. While GrowMad actively promotes any form of modernisation to minimize environmental impact, there's a balance to consider: removing the polythene wrapper could compromise the catalogue's condition during delivery. However, many trade publications successfully arrive protected by paper wrappers, suggesting this could be a viable alternative worth exploring.
Delivery efficiency
Over the years, GrowMad has ordered seeds and sundries on numerous occasions without issues. The deliveries are usually within days, slightly longer during busy seasonal periods as you would expect.
Most of the parcels Kings Seeds sends out are small enough to go via Royal Mail so will be sent out to you either 1st Class or 2nd Class post. Any larger items or heavy items will be sent via a courier (APC or DPD).
International shipping options
Kings Seeds are not allowed to export seed to countries outside the UK OR to Northern Ireland, without the customer purchasing a phytosanitary certificate which costs anything upwards of £250.00. For more information, please contact them by email: info@kingsseeds.com
Returns policy
The Kings Seeds return policy is simple. All their products are supplied with a no-quibble guarantee. They will replace or refund any product that does not meet with your approval, and all they ask is that you contact them within 15 days of purchase.

Opportunities for Enhancement
Areas where we felt Kings Seeds lacked were hard to find. With such a great company offering so much, we did feel that their social media was not being utilised to its full potential. We personally at GrowMad would love to see some of the following being developed:
- Customer Success Stories The gardening community loves to share their growing journeys. We'd be excited to see Kings Seeds showcasing their customers' achievements - from first-time growers to seasoned gardeners, all celebrating the joy of growing from their seeds. Maybe consider Launching a "Kings Seeds Growers" hashtag.
- Seasonal Growing Guides While their website offers excellent information, bringing this knowledge to social media would create a more dynamic connection with their audience. Weekly tips, monthly sowing guides, and timely advice would be invaluable for their followers. Their "What to Sow Now" monthly posts could be linked directly to relevant seeds within their catalogue.
- Behind-the-Scenes Insights We'd love to see more of the Kings Seeds story - their seed selection process, quality control measures, and the passionate team behind the brand. This transparency builds trust and connects customers with the heart of the business. They could also showcase new seed varieties and seasonal collections.
- Interactive Community Building The potential for building a vibrant growing community is enormous. Regular Q&A sessions, growing challenges, and customer spotlights would transform their social media from a broadcast channel into a living, breathing community hub. They could create a Kings Seeds Growing Community, create growing challenges with prizes, Partner with respected gardening influencers and start a weekly Q&A session on Instagram/Facebook. They could also ask for feedback on new varieties and create seasonal photo competitions, growing challenges with prizes and feature customer allotment plots monthly.
- Visual Growing Journeys Following the progress of plants from seed to harvest would be inspirational. Time-lapse videos, progress photos, and growing diaries would showcase the quality and reliability of their seeds while educating customers. Host virtual allotment plot tours.
At times, their response to posts or comments can be sluggish and we would love to have a more frequent posting structure, possibly daily? as they have so much to offer.
By implementing these elements, Kings Seeds could enhance its already excellent reputation and create an even stronger bond with their customers. Their expertise and quality products deserve to be shared more widely through engaging social content.
