Perlite2Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock. After a heating process, it forms a pure white, lightweight granule which is invaluable for adding to compost and other potting media at the start or in the early stages of a plants life. Alternatively, it can be used simply to bulk up compost. GrowMad has put together a list of the very finest suppliers around with our favourite recommendations. Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock that, when heated to high temperatures, produces lightweight micro-porous granules.

Perlite can be used for seed starting, rooted cuttings, potting-on or planting out.  If using for seed starting, Perlite’s structure maintains moisture and temperature levels. When mixed with compost, Perlite holds water and nutrients in the compost, producing a healthier growing media.

Perlite is an ideal compost additive as it helps to retain air in the compost which is essential for healthy root development.

It helps to create an optimum balance of air and water, which makes water logging almost impossible and minimises damage to roots when transplanting. It is ideal for use when sowing seeds, rooting cuttings, potting on and container growing.
