March
on the Allotment
Spring
Spring has sprung, and as the new season awakens from its cold, dark slumber and the malaise of winter, the air is filled with sounds of courting wildlife. The snowdrops and aconites move aside and make way for the daffodils and tulips to enter the stage.
This really is the first busy month of the veg gardening year, and the training and experience gained from this month should put you in good stead for the upcoming late spring and summer. March, although still chilly, is the main preparation month of the veg gardening year.
This has to be one of the gardener's favourite months of the year, as sowings start in earnest.
Early sowings of suitable veg types can now be made outside, but if conditions are still on the poor side, delay until April or sow undercover or on the window sill in modules.
